Berthold Typefoundry Informatie
The H. Berthold typefoundry, renowned for crafting high-quality typefaces, was founded in 1858 by Hermann Berthold in Berlin. By 1918 the foundry had become the largest in the world, with offices in Stuttgart, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, Riga, Budapest and Vienna. Following World War II, Berthold actively developed proprietary typesetting equipment: in the 1950s, Berthold unveiled its first phototypesetting machine, the Diatype; and in the 1960s, Berthold introduced the Diatronic, its first keyboard-controlled phototypesetting for volume production.
To complement its proprietary typesetting equipment business activities, Berthold developed the Berthold Exklusiv Collection, a collection of typefaces created solely for Berthold by distinguished designers. Günter Gerhard Lange, renowned master craftsman, began his association with Berthold at the same time Berthold entered phototype, in 1952. As artistic director from 1961 to 1990, Lange was responsible for the creation, meticulous production standards and attention to quality found in each of the Berthold Exklusivs. In 1991, Bernd Möllenstädt succeeded Lange as the type director for the Berthold Exklusiv Collection and continued Lange's tradition when directing the digitization of the Berthold Exklusivs.
In 1997, Berthold Types Limited published the complete Berthold Exklusiv Collection in Type 1 format with full ISO/Adobe character sets. Soon thereafter Berthold signed a license agreement with Adobe Systems, Inc. to market the Adobe font software versions of the Berthold typefaces, now exclusively available from Berthold and authorized Berthold distributors. In 2000, G.G. Lange rejoined Berthold as an exclusive artistic consultant. With the return of G.G. Lange and the continuation of an active type program (recent new releases include Whittingham and Futura Serie BQ), Berthold reclaims its place as a leading typefoundry. Berthold is the only remaining independent typefoundry from the 19th Century. The tradition continues;
Berthold Types Limited (commonly referred to as Berthold) is the successor to the the highly regarded H. Berthold typefoundry originally of Berlin, Germany. The Berthold foundry, founded in 1858, is renowned for crafting high quality typefaces. Berthold continues this tradition and offers one of the world's leading type collections, the Berthold Exklusiv Collection, which consists of 800+ quality-crafted typefaces created under the guidance of Günter Gerhard Lange. Berthold is located in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. And the Berthold website is http://www.bertholdtypes.com. For more information, send e-mail to info@bertholdtypes.com.
Hermann Berthold
Born in 1831, Hermann Berthold was the son of a calico-printer. On completion of his apprenticeship as a precision-instrument maker and after practical experience gained abroad in galvanography, Hermann Berthold founded his "Institute for Galvano Technology" in Berlin in 1858. Very quickly he discovered a method of producing circular lines from brass and not, as customary at that time, from lead or zinc. The soldering normally necessary could also be dispensed with. The lines were elastic and therefore highly durable. They produced outstandingly fine results. Most of German's letterpress printers and many printers abroad placed their orders with Berthold. His products became so popular that the print trade popularized the saying "As precise as Berthold brass."
In 1878 Hermann Berthold was commissioned to put an end to the confusion of typographic systems of measurement. With the aid of Professor Foerster he succeeded in devising a basic unit of measurement (1m = 2,660 typographic points). This was the birth of the first generally binding system of typographic measurement. It is still used in the trade. Hermann Berthold served as the head of the Berthold typefoundry until 1888.
Günter Gerhard Lange
Lange was born on April 12, 1921 in Frankfurt-an-der-Oder, Germany. He began military service at 18 and was seriously injured in France only a year after the outbreak of World War II leading to his medical discharge from the Germany army. Beginning in 1941, Lange studied at the Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig. There he studied calligraphy, and typesetting and printing with Professor Georg Belwe. Following his graduation in 1945, Lange served as an assistant to Prof Walter Tiemann at the Leipzig Institute, and worked as a freelance graphic artist and painter. In 1949 Lange moved to Berlin and resumed his studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste.
Beginning October 1, 1950, Lange returned to freelance work and began his association with the H. Berthold typefoundry of Berlin. Lange produced his first typeface designs in the 1950s for Berthold. While continuing his freelance work, Lange also served from 1955-60 as a lecturer of typography at the Meisterschule für Grafik und Buchwerbe in Berlin. In 1961 H. Berthold appointed Lange as H. Berthold's artistic director. Lange was appointed to the board of directors of H. Berthold in 1971, confirming the importance of type at Berthold.
As the force behind Berthold's type program from 1961 to 1990, Lange was responsible for the creation, meticulous production standards and attention to quality found in each of the Berthold Exklusivs. Lange's type designs include his classic revivals: AG Book, AG Old Face, Berthold Garamond, Berthold Baskerville Book, Berthold Bodoni Old Face, Berthold Caslon Book and Berthold Walbaum Book; as well as his original designs: Arena New, Boulevard, Champion, Concorde, Concorde Nova, El Greco and Imago. G.G. Lange's skill and craftsmanship elevated Berthold's type program producing one of the most significant libraries in the world.
In addition to his own type creation and art direction for Berthold, Lange continued to teach typography and graphic designs. Some of these schools include: the Kunstschule Alsterdamm in Hamburg (from 1972); the Werbliche Akademie in Munich (from 1973); and, the Lehristitut für Graphische Gestaltung in Munich (from 1974).
Lange retired from Berthold in 1990, yet remained active in lecturing and teaching typography and design. After 10 years of retirement, Lange recently resumed his design activities with Berthold (Whittingham, Imago Expert), and now serves as exclusive artistic consultant to Berthold. Lange's reunion with Berthold provides an indispensable element in the continued development of the Berthold Exklusiv Collection and solidifies Berthold's position as a leading typefoundry.
Bernd Möllenstädt
The talented designer of the well-known Formata typeface, Bernd Möllenstädt was born on February 22, 1943 in Germany. He has lived in Westfalia, Berlin and Munich, Germany, and now permanently resides in Munich. From his earliest years he was interested in typography, first studying as a typesetter (1961-64) and then a student of graphic design (1964-1967).
In 1967 Möllenstädt joined the Berthold typefoundry and his career as one of the leading type personalities began. One year after joining Berthold, he became the head of the type design department. For 22 years he worked as the head of that department, under the leadership of Günter Gerhard Lange. Upon Lange's retirement in 1990, Möllenstädt ascended to the type directorship of Berthold where he was responsible for type design and font mastering.
Möllenstädt designed two typeface for the Berthold Exklusiv Collection, Formata (1988) and Signata (1994). Under license from Berthold, Adobe marketed Formata as part of the Adobe Type Library. Formata is now one of the most successful sans serifs in the world, used both in American and European magazines, as well as newsletters in the Far East (Gulf New Kuwait). Formata also was chosen as the corporate typeface of Postbank, Allianz, VW Skoda, Infratest Burke, etc.
Since 1998 Möllenstädt has worked independently from his own studio in Munich. He often lectures at local Münich schools on typography and graphic design. He has designed diverse logos and corporate type identities for major corporations, including Allianz, Commerzbank, Mauser Officer and Hoepfner.
Möllenstädt continues his association with Berthold as an independent designer. He most recently completed small caps and fractions for Formata. He also has substantially contributed to Berthold's Euro symbol program (e.g. adding the Euro symbol design-specific to the most popular families).
Adobe Font Software Versions
In 1991 H. Berthold AG licensed Adobe over 300 typefaces, including favorites like Akzidenz-Grotesk, Imago, and Formata. Adobe produced Type 1 font software versions of these typefaces and added them as 54 packages to the Adobe Type Library. Berthold is now the exclusive marketer of these Adobe font software versions.

Berthold Baskerville Book
Transitional
When designing Berthold Baskerville Book, Günter Gerhard Lange analyzed and compared John Baskerville's original type (1752-1757) and countless cuts based on the original design. Lange's interpretation also took into account today's printing and composing technology. Compared to Berthold Baskerville, it is slightly lighter in weight and has more contrast in the strokes. The result is that Lange's Baskerville is balanced yet maintains the beauty of the original design. Lange also acknowledged Baskerville's background as a handwriting teacher with the graceful cursive capitals, particularly J, K, N, T, Y and Z. Berthold offers two software versions:

Berthold Bodoni Old Face
Modern 20th Century
Günter Gerhard Lange extensively researched and analyzed numerous original Bodoni prints when creating Berthold Bodoni Old Face. As with all of Lange's typefaces, he adapted this new Bodoni to meet the demands of today's composing and printing technology. The results are a Bodoni strictly dedicated to Giambattista Bodoni's originals of the late 1700s, but with more color and stroke variations than other Bodonis. H. Berthold first released the design in 1983, and added small caps and old style figures in 2000. Berthold Bodoni Old Face is known for legibility and clarity even in the smallest sizes. Berthold offers two software versions:

Berthold Caslon Book
Transitional
Prior to designing Berthold Caslon Book, Günter Gerhard Lange intensively researched both the English type founder William Caslon's 1725 types, and the Dutch forerunners of the 17th century upon which Caslon based his work. H. Berthold released Berthold Caslon Book in 1977. Berthold's Caslon is a popular choice for large bodies of text and also for display work. Berthold offers two software versions:

Concorde
Transitional
Berthold first released Concorde in 1969. Günter Gerhard Lange designed this text face to meet the demands of today's composing and printing technology. This contemporary design is a highly legible typeface well-suited for large bodies of text. It offers an excellent alternative to Times New Roman. Berthold offers two software versions:
BQ version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/bq_library/90061.html

Concorde Nova + Expert
Transitional
With condensed type gaining popularity in the 1970s, Berthold released Günter Gerhard Lange's original design, Concorde Nova, in 1975. Though a condensed typeface, it has great legibility and is clear and appealing. Concorde Nova is especially suited for spread sheets, financial statements and cramped spaces with numbers. It is a good alternative to Univers 57 and Frutiger Condensed when a condensed serif type is preferred. Berthold offers two software versions:
BQ version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/bq_library/90064.html
Adobe version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/adobe_lib/080266000.html
El Greco
Script
El Greco was designed by Günter Gerhard Lange in 1964. El Greco is paired with Arkona, designed in 1935 by Karl Klauß. These scripts dress up informal documents and add lightness to formal documents. Berthold offers two software versions:
BQ version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/bq_library/90040.html
Adobe version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/adobe_lib/080395000.html
Formata
Sans Serif
Bernd Möllenstädt's first type design, Formata, was released in 1984. Instead of linear severity common to many sans serifs, Formata offers curved strokes and interesting details that are subtle in smaller sizes but distinguishable in larger sizes, thus, appropriate for both text and display. The family has an extensive weight range and offers small caps and old style figures as well as condensed versions, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of applications.
The Formata family is a good alternative to Bell Gothic and Egyptienne F and is especially useful for office memorandum, and scanning and faxing documents. Formata's bold condensed weight also is useful for headlines need to grab the readers' attention.
Formata includes an outline weight, expert characters and condensed weights. In 2000, the Euro was added and, in 2001 Möllenstädt added small caps and fractions.
Futura Serie BQ
Released by Berthold on September 14, 2000, Futura Serie BQ is a new version of the well-known geometric sans serif typeface design by Paul Renner and the Bauer typefoundry. Futura Serie BQ is a totally new digital interpretation of Futura by noted Berthold type designer, Dieter Hofrichter of Münich, Germany. His interpretation emphasizes the consistency of Renner's original design yet satisfies the current needs of design professionals.
Futura Serie BQ offers the following improvements: a uniform series of weights; small caps and old style figures for all roman and condensed weights; and Euro symbols for all roman and condensed weights. In addition, Berthold's new version of Futura eliminates the inherent problems (e.g. quirky incisions and unnecessary shadows) of earlier PostScript versions resulting from their photosetting origins. Futura is a trademark of Neufville, SA.

Berthold Garamond
Oldstyle
Claude Garamond began as an apprentice to a Paris printer in the early 1500s. Later he was one of the first to specialize in designing and casting type at a time when it was most common for those functions to be melded with that of printer and publisher. His designs became standards in 16th century Europe and have inspired countless versions over the centuries . As is his practice, Günter Gerhard Lange studied the original Garamond prints extensively before adapting his own interpretation, released by Berthold in 1972. Under the direction of Lange, small caps, old style figures and additional condensed versions will be added to the family in 2000, making Berthold Garamond an extensive and versatile family well-suited for a variety of applications. Berthold offers two software versions:
BQ version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/bq_library/90076.html
Adobe version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/adobe_lib/080250000.html
Imago
Sans Serif
Developing a new sans serif clearly distinguishable from existing sans serifs is a difficult task. Günter Gerhard Lange accomplished that with Imago, introduced by Berthold in 1982. It is narrower in proportion than others, has a square-like shape to its curves and numerals that are slightly shorter than its cap height. Particular attention was given to the expression of each individual character and great care was taken to keep them open and clear even in the smallest of sizes and boldest of weights. Under the direction of G.G. Lange, bold and bold italic weights were added in 2000, making Imago an extremely well-balanced family with universal applicability. Imago is especially useful for office memorandum, and scanning and faxing documents. Berthold offers two software versions:
BQ version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/bq_library/090191000.html
Adobe version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/adobe_lib/080217000.html
Berthold Walbaum Book
Modern
Justin Erich Walbaum's typeface of 1804 was cut by hand, thus, varying in forms and proportions in each size. Günter Gerhard Lange's Berthold Walbaum Book is based on the 16 point size of Walbaum's 1804 typeface and has great contrast in stroke weight. Berthold released Berthold Walbaum Book in 1975. It is well-suited for body copy, particularly for formal documents that need a contemporary flair, as well as for headlines. Berthold offers two software versions:
BQ version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/bq_library/90096.html
Adobe version http://www.bertholdtypes.com/adobe_lib/080081000.html
Whittingham
Released on March 17, 2000 by Berthold, Whittingham is a new Berthold Exklusiv typeface designed by Günter Gerhard Lange, renowned master craftsman and exclusive artistic consultant to Berthold, and his colleague Dieter Hofrichter, also a Berthold Exklusiv designer (Vergil).
Whittingham is a rendition of the type used around 1840 by Charles Whittingham, founder of the Chiswick Press in Birmingham, England. The Chiswick Press was one of the most successful commercial printing houses of the 19th Century. Berthold's Whittingham retains characteristics of the Modern typefaces, like Bodoni and Walbaum, from the 18th Century, yet introduces a steel engravers' appearance - especially in Whittingham's italic weights - similar to the other examples of 19th Century Scotch types (e.g. Pica Roman No. 2, Scotch Roman, Caledonia).
G.G. Lange and Hofrichter began developing Whittingham in 1992, and recently completed the family. They chose this typeface particularly for its distinguishing characteristics from other revivals of the same period. As with each Berthold Exklusiv, Whittingham was subject to multiple trial settings, submissions of enlargements and reductions, and numerous revisions. G.G. Lange and Hofrichter's minute examination of every graphic nuance results in a finely tuned, new serif face.
Whittingham is the first of many new, GGL Exklusiv designs that Berthold plans to add to the Berthold Exklusiv Collection. With the return of G.G. Lange as an exclusive, artistic consultant to Berthold, and the release of Whittingham, Berthold reclaims its place as a leading typefoundry. Berthold is the only remaining independent typefoundry from the 19th Century.
